David Stern is a clever fella. He knew when he "gave" Michael Jordan the Charlotte Bobcats, (who had just lost Bob Johnson 100 million and put Johnson another million in debt), that he would have Jordan in his pocket. Now Stern trots MJ out to lead the charge to hold the players at gun point for a mugging.
I digress for a moment. Yes, I loved MJ as a player, even wrote a tribute song about "His Airness", but the MJ I’ve witnessed as an NBA executive, (President of Basketball Operations & GM) and owner has shown poor judgement and even worst business instincts.
Back to Jordan’s Faustian Bargain with Stern. While I’m no fan of Bob Johnson, the former Bobcats owner does hold a masters degree from Princeton and has had extensive experience in the business arena. And if he lost or became indebted to the tune of $200 million in less than 6 years, just what did Jordan think he was getting or going to do to make the franchise profitable, for that matter?
Stern however set it up beautifully, (like a master tennis pro setting up a lob), handed the small market, barely on life support, team to Jordan, knowing that he would own Mike, down the road, to do any of the NBA’s bidding.
So Jordan has either willingly or through his bargain with Stern, taken on the role as the lead dog in the NBA’s quest to wrestle hundreds of millions away from the players. This all the while he has players signed to his “Brand Jordan” moniker with Nike.
One would have thought that Michael would be the one owner most sympathetic to the player’s plight, the one lobbying the owners to make a fair deal with the players. Instead he wants the players to guarantee his woefully managed franchise a profit. I dare say the Bobcats will never be profitable under Jordan, unless he sells the franchise after the owners finishing ripping off their players.
Just for the record here are some of Jordan’s executive moves:
These are the most glaring of Jordan’s ineffective decisions as an executive, but nothing compares to his leading the hard line owners against the players & their union of which he was once a member and beneficiary.
Jordan has proved to be both a callous & self-centered owner and this stance is going to backfire on him with both agents and players. These negotiations will be remembered for a very long time.
“I don’t want any of my clients playing for Michael Jordan, Paul Allen, Robert Sarver, Dan Gilbert or Peter Holt,” said one agent. “We won’t sign with them, unless they’re willing to really overpay. That’s going to be the only way these hard-line owners are going to land any free agents after the way they’ve handled these negotiations.”
As we wait for the outcome of this lockout, one thing is certain. Michael Jeffrey Jordan has added a new chapter to his legacy. One that is not so glorious. As with all “Faustian Bargain’s”, there is a high price to pay. And for all those young players who looked up to MJ on the court, LeBron, D. Wade, Carmelo & Chris Paul, beware & be aware of what happens when you sell your soul!
